6 Website Design, Domain and SEO No-Nos

Google today has a clean design, and most other sites also are mobile-friendly. But what about those poorly designed sites? Here are the 7 site design mistakes that you should avoid:

1. Focusing more on being desktop friendly instead of mobile friendly - Sure, you love to make websites for desktops, but don't forget to be mobile friendly. Leaving your website only desktop-friendly can lead to people immediately leaving your website, also known as a 'bounce'. The higher the bounce rate, the more likely your rank is to decline on search engines.

2. Too basic HTML - Some website designers are currently loving basic HTML more. While loving basic HTML is a point, clean and contemporary site design is more likely to draw traffic to your site. For legal reasons, Google cannot accept basic HTML sites found on their search engine. They seriously penalize basic HTML lovers.

3. Choosing a spammy domain - Nearly all websites use a domain nowadays, but avoid domains like ticketomaticblahblahblah.com (Musicairport Ticket-O-Matic) or theshityouwerentsupposedtohear.com (Jeffree Star Cosmetics). Instead, use omatic.musicairport.com or jeffreestarcosmetics.com. Also avoid rarely used domain endings like .name and .info plus hyphens. Google will penalize you accordingly.

4. Attracting the wrong people with the wrong website - Imagine MacKenzie Hollister runs a makeup and skincare business named 'Hollister's Homemade Cosmetics and Skincare' and she has one image with the Alt text keyword 'MacKenzie (me!)' while the other image's Alt text keyword says 'My Cute Designer Clothing', which are relevant to her images. But people who search for either Kelvin MacKenzie or Chanel may click her website by accident.

5. Ranking lower than your competitors - Imagine Zoey Franklin is a skilled ceramic artist and has her own ceramic objects shop named 'Zoey's Happy Ceramics'. She chooses the SEO keywords 'zoey franklin', 'ceramic artists in Westchester', 'zoey's ceramics', and 'ms. franklin's ceramics shop'. The keyword 'zoey franklin' makes her site rank lower than her Wikipedia character biography, while the keyword 'ceramic artists in Westchester' makes her site rank lower than her BFF's ceramics shop's site.

6. Forgetting your geography - Imagine Brandon Roberts, owner of 'Brandon's Kissing Charity', forgets all about that he runs the charity in Miami, Florida. People will only search for his website with the keyword 'charities'. He must add the keyword 'Miami' which refers to where his charity is located at.
